What to Do if You Lose an Adult Tooth

You probably remember losing a tooth as a child to be a fun yet scary experience that ultimately culminated in a visit from the tooth fairy and some cash under your pillow. Unfortunately for adults, the tooth fairy doesn’t collect adult teeth, and failing to take immediate action after losing a tooth can result in permanent damage to your gums. If you knock out a tooth, don’t panic. Follow these steps recommended by the American Association of Endodontists:

  • Recover the tooth. Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the part you chew with). Avoid touching the root if at all possible and handle the tooth very carefully.
  • Gently clean the tooth. Gently clean the tooth with warm water if it has become dirty. Do not use soap, chemicals, or toothpaste on the tooth. Avoid drying the tooth with a towel or tissue.
  • Reposition the tooth in the socket. Inserting the tooth back into the socket will help protect your roots and gums. Hold the tooth with both hands, position it in your gums, and gently bite down to secure the tooth in place.
  • Keep the tooth moist. Keeping the tooth moist at all times will help avoid damage to the root. If the tooth cannot be inserted back into your mouth, hold the tooth securely in your mouth next to your cheek, in a glass of milk, or in a jar of saline solution. Do not use tap water to keep the tooth moist, as this is too harsh and will damage the roots.
  • See a dentist immediately. Contact your provider of emergency dentistry in Philadelphia as soon as possible. Ideally, you will want to get into the dentist’s office immediately, but with proper care, a tooth can be reinserted even after hours of being outside of the mouth.
